About Assateague Island and Chincoteague Kayak Tours
Assateague Island is a 37-mile barrier island ecosystem across the Maryland and Virginia coasts. It features salt marshes, beaches, and a famous population of feral horses. The southern portion is the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Here, visitors can see the Assateague Lighthouse and access paved nature trails.
Kayaking is highly recommended for exploring the inland channels. Shifting tides and shallow mudflats make the area tricky to navigate alone. Guided eco-tours leave from Chincoteague docks and last roughly 2.5 hours. Read our guide on Kayak Tour Prices to compare options.
Regulations require all visitors to stay at least 40 feet away from the wild horses. Touching or feeding the animals is illegal. Learn more about the different areas in our Virginia District overview.
