Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this refuge requires a $10 daily vehicle pass to enter. The Virginia side restricts its wild horse population to about 150 adults to protect the ecosystem. Remember that dogs are strictly prohibited here to keep the wildlife safe.

You can drive into the refuge via Route 175 from Chincoteague Island. Stop by the visitor center for an Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) permit or park at the designated lots to hike the paved trails.
