The refuge is open year-round. April to May and September to October are the best times to visit. These months offer comfortable temperatures, smaller crowds, and fewer bugs.
Summer brings peak crowds for the July Pony Swim. It also brings intense heat and heavy populations of mosquitoes and greenhead flies.

Packing for the refuge
Industrial-strength bug spray is mandatory. Greenhead flies and mosquitoes are fierce, especially in summer. Wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing for extra protection. Bring water shoes or old sneakers for walking on muddy, shell-covered shores.
Food must be stored securely. Use a zippered cooler with nylon straps or lock food inside your vehicle. The wild horses are known to scavenge and steal food from open bags. Always carry at least 32 ounces of drinking water per person.
