Many visitors confuse Chincoteague and Assateague. They are two adjacent islands on the Mid-Atlantic coast. You drive through Chincoteague to reach the Virginia entrance of Assateague Island. Here is exactly how they differ.

What is the main difference between Chincoteague and Assateague?

Chincoteague is a populated town, and Assateague is an undeveloped natural reserve.

Chincoteague Island holds the town infrastructure. You will find the hotels, restaurants, and kayak rental docks here. Assateague Island is the 37-mile barrier island directly to the east. It is managed jointly by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Maryland State Parks. No one lives on Assateague, and commercial development is banned.

Where do the wild ponies live?

The wild ponies live exclusively on Assateague Island.

The horses roam the beaches and salt marshes of Assateague. You will not find them walking around the streets of Chincoteague. The Virginia herd is restricted to about 150 adults to protect the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors must stay at least 40 feet away from the horses at all times.

When are the ponies on Chincoteague?

The horses are only on Chincoteague during the annual Pony Swim.

The famous Chincoteague Pony Swim takes place annually on the last Wednesday of July. During this event, the horses are rounded up on Assateague and swim across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague. The summer brings peak crowds, intense heat, and biting insects, so pack industrial-strength bug spray.

What is the difference between the Maryland and Virginia sides of Assateague?

Virginia offers the wildlife refuge and lighthouse, while Maryland offers beach camping and OSV zones.

Assateague Island spans two states. The Virginia side connects to Chincoteague and is home to the historic Assateague Lighthouse built in 1867. Dogs are strictly prohibited here. The Maryland district is further north. It allows dogs on a 6-foot leash and features oceanside campgrounds where horses often walk right through campsites.
