Kayaking and Water Trails

Explore the shallow inland channels and salt marshes between Chincoteague and Assateague islands. Kayaking offers a quiet way to view wild horses and diverse birdlife from a safe distance.

The barrier island ecosystem features a network of creeks and coves perfect for paddling. You can rent a kayak to navigate the channels yourself or join a guided eco-tour to avoid getting stranded at low tide. Guided kayak tours usually last between 2 and 2.5 hours. Prices range from $45 to $65 per person, though rates change by platform.

By law, you must stay at least 40 feet away from wild horses at all times. Bring industrial-strength bug spray to deter mosquitoes and greenhead flies. If you bring your own kayak, you need a Coast Guard-approved life jacket and safety whistle.
