What is the best way to see the wild ponies on Assateague Island?
Taking a guided kayak or boat eco-tour is highly recommended. These tours navigate the shallow inland channels where ponies frequently graze. On land, use the Woodland Trail & Pony Overlook.
Which side of Assateague Island is better, Maryland or Virginia?
It depends on your interests. The Maryland side offers extensive beach camping and OSV zones. The Virginia side has the historic lighthouse, paved trails, and access to Chincoteague town amenities. Read more in Maryland vs Virginia.
How close can you get to the wild horses on Assateague Island?
You must stay at least 40 feet (about one bus-length) away from the wild horses at all times. Touching, approaching, or feeding them is illegal.
Do you need a guided tour to kayak around Assateague?
No, you can rent a kayak to self-navigate. However, shifting tides and wind changes can easily strand you on mudflats. A guided tour is strongly advised for beginners.
Where do kayak tours leave from to see the Chincoteague ponies?
Tours depart from docks and public launching points on Chincoteague Island, such as Memorial Park. They head east into the Assateague Channel and surrounding marshes.
Is there a weight or age limit for Assateague kayak tours?
Most guided kayak tour operators enforce a minimum age limit of 5 years old. Children under 15 using rental kayaks require active adult supervision.
What should I wear for a kayak tour in Chincoteague?
Wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing to combat biting insects. Water shoes or old sneakers are essential for muddy shores. Always wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.

Dogs are strictly prohibited in the Virginia Refuge and Maryland State Park. They are only allowed on the Maryland National Seashore on a 6-foot leash.
